How I keep Maverick {and all of his crap} ORGANIZED

The only 'toy' box permitted in our living area. If he has too much to fit in here...he has TOO MUCH.

Today I'm going to share with you how I keep my sweet little bundle of joy from completely over-taking our house with All The Stuff.

I've become an Olympic medalist at organizing our 1,200SF abode...and over the past year with all the EXTRA stuff we've taken on thanks to Maverick, I think I've earned a gold medal. At least when it comes to our closets and dressers and drawers.

Here's how I keep Maverick and his stuff neat and organized.

DRESSER:
Top Left Dresser Drawer
Here's where I keep the socks Maverick is currently wearing + slippers/booties. The shoes he wears every day are in the kitchen in the metal 'shoe bin' but these are the shoes I don't want to forget about because they're coming up in the next size. I make sure he tries them on every once in a while so he doesn't outgrow them before he's ever worn them!
Top Left Middle Drawer
This is a drawer I didn't anticipate being quite so...full...and insanely useful. Everything from gas drops to ibuprofen in there and I can honestly say we've used EVERYTHING stored in this drawer at least once. I like to keep it tidy like this so everything is easy to find.
Top Right Middle Drawer
I keep a jar full of diapers on top of the dresser but this is where I hide the diapers and wipes we use day in and day out. Some people might not like opening a drawer every time they want to grab a diaper, but this is how I've done it since Day 1, so it's really no different than reaching for a diaper in any other location. And I like that they are HIDDEN. Extra boxes in different sizes are kept in the closet and the basement.
Top Right Dresser Drawer
This one changes with the seasons...a month ago there were trunks and sunscreen in here...now we have winter hats and mittens. I like to go through everything pretty regularly so I know what he has, what fits, what is *going* to fit, and what he might need. Then if I see something on sale when we're out and about...I know if it's necessary or not.
Left Middle Drawer
Pajamas, pants, and a couple sporty 'outfits,' that currently fit. Josh hates that I call things outfits, but I what I mean by that is...it's something that came with matching pants and a top and they only make sense worn together.
Right Middle Drawer
Short sleeve, long sleeve, and a couple outfits that all currently fit. Maverick probably has the most stuff in this size because he wears his clothes for so long! Some of this he's been wearing since May/June (and in baby-years that's a long time!). In May I realized that he'd been wearing most of his clothes since Christmas...so he has a fairly 'complete' wardrobe in each size because he wears each size for more than one season.
Bottom Left Drawer
This is the drawer that's 'coming up.' It's 12-18 month, 18 month, and some 18-24 month stuff. As you can see...we're heavy on the Christmas pajamas (oops!) and not much else. After going through this drawer today, I realized I should be on the lookout for good deals on 18-month sized stuff. And it's always good to know what size to tell the grandparents for Christmas. :)
Bottom Right Drawer
This dresser is amazing for so many reasons, but the fact that I can buy ahead when I find great sales and store clothes up to 4T is probably my favorite. In here I have piles of 24 month, 2T, 3T, and a few sets of 4T pajamas. I'm a huge sucker for pajamas...especially if I stumble upon something with a raccoon on it.
CLOSET:
Outgrown clothes are stored in the canvas bin. Each cubby has a 'theme' and I store whatever makes sense together in that cubby. Space heater, humidifier, diaper/wipe storage, swimming/bath time stuff, sheets/changing pad covers, and shoes he will grow in to (there's a paid of mini-Superstars back there that I got for less than $10 at Kohl's!) are basically what's kept in here.
This divider system is still really working for me and I like that when I buy a sweater for Christmas 2018 on SUPER-sale...I can 'file' it away in the right section. It makes it easy to see what's 'coming up' or what he hasn't worn in a while if the seasons have changed. There are only a couple things I've purchased in advance that he never wore...for example, I went a little overall crazy at Overflow while I was pregnant because baby overalls are just the cutest freaking things...then I realized, I don't really like Maverick in overalls. Like...something about them aren't his style. I know that seems insane to say about a baby...I have just never liked them on him! But when you buy stuff for 50 cents, it's not a huge deal if the kid doesn't wear a couple things.
This precious little dresser is way more useful than you would think. I go through it every couple of months to clean it out...but for the most part it's all really important stuff that's in there! Manuals for every. single. baby. thing we own. Papers from every doctor visit...cards from special people, the vintage Halloween costume I'm putting together...it will probably be the first piece of furniture to leave this room if we ever have to put another baby in here, but it's full of important stuff we need! The second drawer was full of everything I needed to feed Mav in the middle of the night, which was handy. The bottom drawer is full of all the notes and cards we got from showers and when he was born. And the small cupboard door is where we keep extra outlet plugs, garbage bags, and the monitors we never need because our house is so small. ;)
BOOKS AND TOYS:
At this point, Mav doesn't really 'play' in his room. On occasion I pull something out of this box to keep him entertained for five more minutes if I'm getting ready for church and he's not cooperating...but for now it's just full of cute raccoons and a couple antique tractors. Again, the rule is...if he starts to accumulate too much stuff that it can't fit in this huge toy box, he has too much! And it will be time to take a garbage bag of goodies to Overflow.
My baby's library just keeps growing and I am so happy about it!
This whole shelf has gotten a bit harder to 'style' but I'm doing my best...there are books stacked behind that raccoon but we make sure to rotate through them all. We'll be reading these books for the next eight (ish) years, so it's a darn good thing we have some variety. ;)
My attempt at hiding some of the primary colors I detest. ;)
The books on this shelf are ones Maverick won't be able to touch/read/enjoy until he's old enough to stop eating them...they're Little Golden Books from when I was little and a couple are from when my mom was little, I think!
To keep things fresh, I pack seasonal books away with my decorating totes...it means we have more room on the shelves up here, and it's that much more exciting when we pull the special Christmas books out AT Christmastime. :) A kid can never have too many books, right?!
My overzealous helper (yes that's him climbing up my backside to stand and 'help' me).

One last thing...every time he 'outgrows' something (Bumbo, swing, jumper) it gets cleaned and goes down to the basement to a labeled tote. I imagine the next time we have to do this whole baby thing, it won't be quite as 'easy' as life is right now with just Mav...so I'm trying my best to help future Mollie. All his clothes are folded and labeled in a tote, bottles, binkey's, swaddles are all packed away too...the baby-days are definitely gone so that's a little sad, but not having a colorful bouncer in my living room or a huge carrier sitting in my kitchen makes things less sad. ;)

How do you organize your little ones?? Specifically...HOW do you pack away the swing and all its parts?? Because I am STRUGGLING with that thing downstairs right now. Sure, all the bars come apart...but it won't fit into even the biggest tote I found. So if you've read this far...help.

Neutral Fall Decorating at 422 13th St.

Over the past couple years it's been my misson to paint and re-vamp and decorate our home to be as neutral as possible...and this fall is no exception. There are no leafy orange garlands above my windows...no glittery orange pumpkins scattered across my buffet...no bright fall colors anywhere.

At first I was a little bummed I'd decided against color a few months ago (I have two totes FULL of beautiful fall decor in the basement as I type this), but I think this year might be one of my favorites for fall decorating EVER. Our house is easier to keep clean (do you know how hard garlands are to dust under/around??), feels WAY less cluttered, and when I pull the Halloween stuff out in a week or two, it won't seem as INSANE as it usually does (I am not a Halloween decorator by choice...Josh is obsessed with Halloween so I have some One Spot stuff I get out to make him happy).

Here's a glimpse of the inside of our home this fall...white/gray/cream became my best friends, and I only struggled a couple times to say 'no' to some of the crazy adorable fall stuff in Target's Threshold aisle. Ok that's not entirely true, it's an ongoing struggle to say 'no'...but so far so good.

OUTSIDE...

I nabbed that giant mum for $15 when it was one of Hy-Vee's 'Hot Deal's' then traveled to Manson for crazy great deals on all my pumpkins and gourds. My old, rusty barn star got a fresh coat of cream spray paint earlier this summer...and that's pretty much all it took to get rid of all the color from my outdoor decor.
I WANT ALL THE GRAY PUMPKINS.
I *may* have an unhealthy obsession with cotton.
The $50 cotton wreath I somehow managed to buy during an amazing sale  (that I didn't even know about!) for $10.
Ignore the steps that need a fresh coat of paint...I ran out of steam on projects this summer...and we need a new screen door...but here's our little front porch for fall. ;)
Decorating with different shades of white is so different than what I've done in the past but it was a fun challenge.
This picture was taken prior to the squirrels destroying my beautiful Indian Corn, but this is what it originally looked like. ;)
I always like to make sure our shed gets a little love...hanging this feeder trough and changing the Dollar Tree flowers every couple months makes it easy to keep it cute.
I don't know why decorating with neutrals is so hard for me...it literally couldn't be easier. An old wooden gray chair + one white pumpkin = DONE!
If this looks more like I just threw a bunch of crap in a pile and called it decorating...that's because that's exactly what I did. I try and 'arrange' this area, but it always falls over when it storms and then the chair falls apart even more and the ground is uneven and just when I'm about to give up on it, we come home from a walk and it sort of looks cute. I don't even know anymore.
INSIDE...

That was a super cheap, orange foam wreath...I spray painted it cream with leftover spray paint from my buffet project and hung it up with twine!
The only color I allowed this year! I fought for this 'B' pumpkin SO HARD a few years ago at Hobby Lobby (did you know B's are like an insanely popular letter?!) and I love it...so it's sitting atop a cake stand I scored FOR LESS THAN TWO DOLLARS.
Dollar Tree flowers are at it again...these look pretty fake, but I feel like they add something to this corner of my kitchen.
If you haven't made a trip to your closest TJ Maxx for some wandering...do it SOON. This is a $20 candle I got for $5.99. I know. Just go.
Today when we had our vents and air ducts cleaned I ended up having to move about four doors in our house...not real doors to rooms...huge heavy ones that are purely for 'decorative' purposes...but it's worth it, right? This beauty is my pride and joy.
It's possible I went a little overboard with the fake flowers this year...but bringing real stuff inside in the fall makes me sneeze...so fake $1 flowers it is.

My afternoon view most days...
The closer we get to Thanksgiving, I think I'll swap these hydrangeas out for bundles of wheat...but for now they're workin' for me.
More TJ Maxx candles and in five days that Cottage magazine will be replaced with Magnolia Journal...I WILL BE AT TARGET TO BUY ONE AT 8:01.
My goodness...why didn't someone tell me less is more YEARS ago? Keeping these shelves light and simple makes me happier. And it's easier to train Maverick when nothing I own is too precious for him to bang around while he learns what 'no' means.
I spray-painted my One Spot pumpkins last year...turning them from metallic orange to cream and now I'm thinking about doing it to ALL of my pumpkins. I hesitate because I know someday I might want to decorate with orange again...the jury is still out.
Trying to grow my old book collection...they're so perfect for a pop of color or height where I need it.
A few years ago when I told Josh I wanted to nail this piece of ceiling tin to the feature wall in the living room he hesitated but said fine because he likes old stuff. When I told him I 'got such a good deal on it, only $19!' He looked at my like I was crazy and said, "We paid MONEY for this?! It looks like debris you pull from a field after a tornado." Haha oops? I added a cotton garland for fall, swap the pictures out every couple of months, and it's one of my favorite walls in our house.
Jamie said I might be over-doing it with cotton, but I promptly ignored her. I need a few more books to add some height under that picture frame on the top shelf, but this is what it looks like now. Painting all my black furniture white wasn't easy (and I'm not sure I would even recommend it) but I love the results in our living room.
I added little more color than I wanted to with a couple fall canvases... but I couldn't just leave them in the basement. They're too pretty! I add a few more to my collection each year when I make a trip to Real Deals in Fort Dodge and Josh loves that I'm decorating with pictures of barns...so it's a win win.
There it is! Simple, neutral, classic, fall decorating at our house. What are your favorite ways to decorate in the fall??

The Party Plague

I know I'm not the only one deep in the trenches of the constant barrage of parties and products being pushed through my social media screen. But in recent years it's become too much for me to bear. Like...TOO. MUCH.

So please don't take offense when I say this...

I will not attend, buy, browse, online host, host, or sell any of the stuff you're peddling...not now...not ever.

I have been averaging TWO PARTY INVITES A WEEK for the past month. These things range from skin care to jewelry to leggings. I've been invited to gatherings by people from high school who I haven't talked to in 10 years. Former co-workers. Ladies in my "mom-tribe." I have even had to tell my own sisters 'no' when they start selling something new or host a party...that is how you KNOW I'm not being biased.

I just had to make a rule for myself...the answer is always no. Plain and simple.

I don't know if it's my age or generation or what...but I used to go to every Scentsy, Thirty-One, Signature Homestyle party that came my way. Sometimes it's fun to see friends and chat...but more often than not it was out of obligation. Whether it was obligation the host felt to 'host' a party for the friend who just started selling LulaRoe, or the obligation I felt to the friend who was hosting...it's kind of just all unnecessary. Do I really need another large utility tote? Nah...two are probably enough. Do I really need an expensive necklace with my anniversary stamped on it? That's one thing I can remember pretty easily...so it's cute, but probably not.

I'm likely an easy target for this kind of stuff because most people assume I'm a social girl who enjoys a party with friends and snacks and household decor (you're not exactly wrong), but after a while, I realized I was going to these things twice a month (or more!) and spending money that didn't need to be spent. This summer when the party invites hit an all-time high...I made a sweeping declaration that I would not be hitting this product-party-scene ever. again.

I'm not saying that the people who sell this stuff are wrong or dumb or the stuff they sell is crap. I'm not saying that at all. Some of it is even being sold for good causes! I know a gal who started selling so she could give her profits to an orphanage in Africa. GO HER! I just know, for me, spending $120 on a necklace I don't need (and for no special occasion) IS wrong. And dumb. And I can buy my fall candles at TJ Maxx for $5.99 instead of going to a candle party, succumbing to the 'deal' they're offering and then accidentally end up spending $60.

Can I also just make one other observation that I feel like someone needs to make? The last party I went to was attended by mostly SAHM's. Here we all were...blessed our husbands work hard so we can stay home with our babies...and here we were, spending their hard-earned money on feathery necklaces and clutches and $24 studs that I could buy at Target for $9.99. I know everyone's situation is different and I'm honestly not seeking to judge anyone here...but I felt a little convicted about the whole thing. Of course momma's deserve a night out, an afternoon 'off,' to recharge their batteries...but I couldn't help feeling a little guilty that my husband (who had also just worked a 12-hour day) was home feeding Maverick and putting him to bed while I was out browsing the latest Stella and Dot fashions. The more rampant these purse/candle/dresses/leggings/beachbody/skin care/bag/jewelry/oils/decor/children's book parties become...the MORE I feel that way. And that's why it's become easier to just say no to it all. No to best friends. No to sisters. No to strangers who try to add me to their ItWorks page on Instagram. Saying no to unnecessary events and expenses has become, like...my new favorite thing. And I'm getting really good at it.

Maybe it's just me...if it is, everyone carry on with your parties as you've been accustomed. But I will not be joining you...so for the love, PLEASE stop adding me to your eye lash group and then sending 97 notifications.

An Ode to my Coffee Maker.

To my dearest Coffee Maker...

I want to start off by apologizing for my initial mistreatment of you and the years of neglect you endured at my hands. I didn't realize how amazing and easy it was to make coffee at home, as I never was what you would call a 'Morning Person.' I hope this past year of over-use has made amends for those rocky first years and that we live a long, happy life together.

We've walked a long road, haven't we Coffee Maker? You've been here since the beginning. Before the beginning, actually. I remember opening your big box on my future-mother-in-laws dining room table. You were a gift that was delivered by friends who weren't going to be able to make it to our wedding and I was thrilled. A coffee maker for our counter! Did I even make or drink coffee back then? I don't remember...but everyone registered for a coffee maker so that's what I did too.

You were promptly moved into our first apartment and ignored, but you're black so you looked nice sitting atop the counter. August came around and we packed you up and moved you down the street to a new house. The first home we shared together...the first kitchen you could call your own. You collected dust sitting on the counter while I finished my last semester of college...always tired, always stressed about classes and parking tickets...never fully understanding the magical powers you possessed if only I would let you brew me a cup or two.

Years went by. Occasionally I would let you make me some coffee, but it came in phases and conditions had to be perfect. If I didn't have flavored coffee + hefty amounts of creamer in the fridge...it was just easier to ignore you. This is something I'm not proud of, but I became a social coffee drinker. I would meet friends for a mocha or drink a coffee concoction on the deck with Josh's family...but I never committed to spending time with you and drinking coffee on my own.

I believe it was sometime in the fall of 2013...you became more appealing to me. I'm not sure how or why...but I started firing you up at parties, family gatherings, afternoons when coffee just seemed to 'make sense.' The first big project I remember you seeing me through was the fixer upper acreage we purchased. I had so many long nights and weekends out there painting and cleaning and painting some more, followed by working full-time and coaching cheer. I suddenly knew I needed you. I even drug you out the acreage a couple of times (though it was usually easier to pick coffee up on our way out of town and throw away the cup). You were gradually making your importance known.

I switched from drinking frappacinos and mochas to lattes...a subtle but exciting change. There would be days every once in a while after a big week or an especially late night where I would utter the common phrase, 'I need coffee this morning.' I still kept you an arms length away...a treat for special occasions, gatherings, trips, etc. But you never wavered...always there when I needed you...just waiting for the right time.

Our relationship strengthened that spring when I hosted countless showers at church and in our home. Old church ladies expect coffee. And now that I'm one of those church ladies always throwing showers...it just felt natural to pour myself a cup of coffee (creamer was always needed at this point) and mingle. You really proved yourself when I spent two weeks sanding, staining, and sealing our kitchen cupboards. Family came over to help and all I could offer them was coffee because the kitchen was a mess...I plugged you in wherever you fit and you brewed amazing coffee from horrendous places like the bathroom floor, Coffee Maker. It was during that reno project I realized I could no longer go on living my life without you as an active part of it.

Over time I became more dependent...your smell, your taste...the liquid energy you would bring me each morning and afternoon. Soon I was making cups at work most every morning and slowly realizing the role you were starting to take on. When I got pregnant my first question was, "I can't have coffee for nine months?!" I needed you then more than ever to get through that first trimester alive. Nurses assured me one cup a day was fine, and at that point...that's more than I needed! I didn't know what the future held...

During those nine months, I learned I could totally depend on you. The renter in our basement ended his contract and moved leaving a huge mess behind. You came in clutch for a week while I kept your pot full and our mom's came over for a glorious cup followed by hours of helping me clean and paint. That same spring, Josh finished the beautiful tile in our dining and living room but it was my job to grout and seal 500+ square feet...while I was six months pregnant. You were there for me when the grouting seemed to never. end. I knew if I could make a cup of your goodness in the afternoon after work, I could work on those floors until midnight if I had to. Together, that's what we did.

Maverick arrived in September and as soon as we got home from the hospital I put you to work every morning...and sometimes again in the afternoon. While you're aroma fills the house, I feed the baby, clean up the kitchen, make the bed, and watch The Today Show. After an especially bad night, you are the reason I survived another day with a newborn. You're an integral part of my morning and I look back now and wonder...how did I ever live without you? My only regret is that I didn't let you into my mug sooner.

What a wild ride it's been, dear Coffee Maker. I drink the coffee you make black now...no cream, no sugar...pure and simple coffee the way it's meant to be. You've seen me through good times, bad times...times when we thought renovating an old farmhouse was a good idea. I think about our future together...the homes and the babies and the new jobs you'll see me through. The Thanksgivings and movie nights and family dinners you'll be apart of. I can't wait to grow old with you on my counter. What I want to say is...thank you, Coffee Maker. Thank you.

Planning a First Birthday Party: Games & Activities

I've been to many a kid-birthday party at this point...and typically there is some kind of game or funny thing to do/wear/watch/craft. But for a one-year-old (who's party was quick and being cut short due to G'ma Boersma's funeral in Chicago the next day) I nixed all of this and considered the present-opening, and smash-cake-watching the 'Fun and Games.'

I briefly contemplated making raccon masks for everyone to wear/have to take home from the party, but then realized that was ridiculous and repeated to myself, "This is a one-year-old's birthday party...he's not going to remember it or care." I found it best to stay AWAY from Pinterest once I had my basics for the party planned.

The actual party was an hour and a half from start to finish, which felt just about right for a one-year-old. It didn't even feel 'rushed' because Mav doesn't have an attention span to do most things for an extended period of time anyway. The crew leaving for the funeral in Chicago all wanted to be on the road by 5:30, so we squeezed everything important in before they left and it worked perfectly. Josh wasn't sure if he was even going to the funeral until about five minutes before the trucks pulled out of the driveway which made things interesting...and it was a good thing Mav and I were planning to stay behind all along. The 10-hour road trip, plus hauling and delivering a bunch of stuff on the way back just would not have worked out well with a teething one-year-old (did I mention as soon as the birthday festivities were over, Mav became a HUGE CRAB for about a week?!).

This also allowed for a nice, relaxing evening with my parents, grandma's and aunt left at the house to visit with...they got to see Mav eat his supper and play with his new toys which doesn't easily happen these days with a grandma in a nursing home + a wheel chair. We took turns crowding in the bathroom for bathtime and ended the evening with a walk around campus.

A few other things that made the party easy and I should note...I requested Uncle Nathan be in charge of taking pictures at the party because he usually ends up snapping pics on his camera anyway and it worked out AMAZING. I didn't have to worry about getting pictures of my baby opening his presents or eating ignoring his cake...I just got to pay attention to what was going on. We also paraded every family member through a line for a picture with Maverick as soon as his nap was over and he was happy and I love that we have pictures with everyone and of everyone who was at his first birthday party. :)

Here are a few more pics from the shin-dig and I swear this is my last post about anything baby-birthday related...until next year. ;)

The books with 'moving parts' are a big hit these days. ;)

#boy

I love his monkey feet in this picture.
Forshadowing of how the whole 'Cake Smash' experience would go............................

When we realized it was a lost cause, I figured we might as well get some cute pictures out of it.

Ornery face.

The cake tasted amazing by the way...my dad and I polished it off later that night even after it had been rolled all over the ground and stepped on my Maverick. Sucks to suck Mav. You can try again next year. ;)
